The Candidate: Owen McCarthy

MPI sits down with Republican gubernatorial candidate Owen McCarthy for the latest in our series of interviews with 2026 Maine gubernatorial candidates.

Owen McCarthy, an Maine entrepreneur, has declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor. He sat down with Matt Gagnon to discuss his background, campaign, and his vision for Maine’s future.

Owen is originally from Patten, and describes himself as the son of “a third-generation logger and a second-generation lunch lady.” He is a University of Maine graduate, and is the co-founder of MedRhythms, a company pioneering FDA-approved technology to help people regain mobility after a stroke, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease.

We discuss his backstory, what motivated him to run for governor, and what he wants to do as governor to make permanent change in Maine.

This interview is the fourth in a series of interviews that Maine Policy Institute is conducting with those seeking to be elected governor of Maine. If you missed our prior conversations with Bobby Charles, Jim Libby, or David Jones, make sure you head to our interview archive to catch up on them today.

Maine Policy Institute does not endorse candidates or involve itself in political campaigns. We are bringing you conversations like this so you may better understand the priorities of individuals who seek powerful positions in Maine’s government.
