The Candidate: Garrett Mason

Republican gubernatorial candidate Garrett Mason joins Maine Policy CEO Matt Gagnon for the latest in our series of interviews with 2026 Maine gubernatorial candidates.

Garrett Mason sat down with Matt Gagnon at MPI headquarters to discuss the 2026 gubernatorial campaign, and his candidacy.

Born in Lewiston and raised in Lisbon Falls, Garrett comes from deep Maine roots that stretch back more than 200 years on both sides of his family. Garrett is a 2006 graduate of Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Marketing. After college, he returned home to Maine and began his professional career in the state’s sports administration field, serving in leadership roles with the Portland Sea Dogs and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Lewiston MAINEiacs.

In 2010, at just 25 years old, Garrett ran for the Maine State Senate and defeated an 18-year incumbent by 11% of the vote. He served eight years representing Androscoggin and Kennebec Counties and was twice elected by his Republican colleagues to serve as Senate Majority Leader, becoming the youngest Majority Leader in Maine history at age 29.

After leaving the Legislature, Garrett built and grew businesses in public affairs, crisis management, and real estate.

Our discussion focused on his background, his experience in the Legislature, as well as a host of issues such as energy, housing, and crime.

This interview is the eighth in a series of interviews that Maine Policy Institute is conducting with those seeking to be elected governor of Maine. If you missed our prior conversations with Bobby Charles, Jim Libby, David Jones, Owen McCarthy, Ben Midgley, Jonathan Bush, or Rick Bennett, make sure you head to our interview archive to catch up on them today.

Maine Policy Institute does not endorse candidates or involve itself in political campaigns. We are bringing you conversations like this so you may better understand the priorities of individuals who seek powerful positions in Maine’s government.
