So It Begins

2026 is here, and this is going to be a big year. We take a quick look back, and then a big look forward at what is going to be a very eventful year.

The New Year is here, and the Pine Tree Pulse is back, looking ahead to what is certain to be one of the most consequential years in recent Maine political history.

Before we look ahead to the year to come, we take a brief look back and chat about what we think will stick with us from 2025. What were the big stories that we will remember five or ten years in the future? What truly defined the year? From big legal challenges to Mills fighting with Trump and the murder of Charlie Kirk, there was a lot to remember.

But we’ve talked about all that before, so we also wanted to look ahead to 2026. The New Year was kicked off by New York City installing its new socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani. In his inaugural address, Mamdani declared that his government would “replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.” Matt wonders who, outside of the radical socialist left, has an issue with either ruggedness or individuality, and the crew discusses what New York is likely to see with the pride of Bowdoin College running the show.

We also discuss our (general) expectations for the year, and how the vibe is shaping up in Maine’s various political races.

Happy New Year to you all, and here’s to 2026!
