Losers Win in Ranked Choice Voting Election

Two out of the three RCV races produced winners who ultimately lost in the first round of voting. Two out of three also produced phantom non-majorities.

Ranked Choice Voting is a system that Maine has been forced to live with for almost a decade now, and it continues to introduce confusion, delays, uncertainty, and messy tabulation side-shows into our election system.

After a week and a half, and at 1:30 in the morning, the Secretary of State’s office finally released the final RCV tallies in the Republican and Democratic primaries for governor, and the 2nd Congressional District race. Bobby Charles, Hannah Pingree and Matt Dunlap have all emerged victorious.

We discuss the RCV system itself, including the myriad of problems (again) the system produced this year, the talking points that supporters use to justify the system (that just aren’t true) and we give some next-level detail to the round by round numbers, and what they tell us about the support that the various candidates had.

We also look ahead to the fall matchup now that you have candidates to consider, particularly the three-way dynamic that exists with independent candidate Rick Bennett in the race as well.

All this and more this week on the Pine Tree Pulse.
